Grammy award winning saxophonist George Garzone, from NYC, is one of the most respected and revered saxophonists in the world, which is an opinion that is strongly shared by both fans and players of the music alike. He is a true pioneer in his efforts as a player, improviser, conceptualist, and educator. His sound is instantly recognizable and his innovative harmonic principles have earned him a place at the forefront of what is possible on the tenor saxophone in the improvised realm.
He is a founding member of one of jazz's longest running group's "The Fringe," which has been exploring groundbreaking concepts in harmony and improvisation since 1972, and this trio has influenced a generation of musicians in all arenas from the classic jazz format to the avante-garde. He has also performed extensively with many of the jazz worlds top visionaries such as Elvin Jones, Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Dave Holland, and Carla Bley.
George is also one of the most sought after educators in the jazz world today, teaching at all the major US institutions from Berklee College of Music to the Manhattan School of Music. Some of his more notable students have been Joshua Redman, Branford Marsalis, Danillo Perez, and Mark Turner. Due to the high demand on George's schedule, this will be a major treat to have him in the Pizza Express Jazz Club, as he rarely visits the UK.
For his two nights as part of the "Michael Janisch Presents" residency, George will be presenting his classic Sax Trio, which features one of his usual sparring partners from NYC, the explosive Pete Zimmer on drums, along with Michael Janisch on acoustic bass. Together they will explore all forms of improvisation from playing reworkings of jazz standards, to originals, to free formed music. Expect nothing but the best in contemporary saxophone improvisations.
